Growing Herbs on Your Kitchen Windowsill
There's nothing quite like snipping fresh basil into a pasta sauce or adding just-picked rosemary to roasted potatoes. A windowsill herb garden takes up minimal space, costs almost nothing to start, and rewards you with flavour that dried herbs simply cannot match. Even the smallest kitchen can accommodate a row of pots on a sunny sill.
The best herbs for windowsill growing include basil, chives, parsley, coriander, mint, thyme, and oregano. Choose a south-facing window that receives at least four to six hours of direct sunlight. Use small pots (10 to 15cm) with drainage holes and quality potting mix. Water when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch - herbs prefer slightly drier conditions than most houseplants.
Harvest regularly to encourage bushy growth. Pinch off the tips of basil and mint to prevent leggy stems. Cut chives and parsley from the outer edges, allowing the centre to continue growing. Avoid harvesting more than one-third of the plant at once. Feed monthly with a diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season. With minimal care, your windowsill herb garden will provide fresh flavours for months on end.
