Building a Herb Spiral: A Beautiful and Functional Garden Feature
A herb spiral is one of the most elegant solutions in garden design. This vertical, spiral-shaped raised bed creates multiple microclimates in a compact footprint, allowing you to grow Mediterranean sun-lovers at the top and moisture-loving plants at the base. It's beautiful, productive, and builds easily in a single weekend with basic materials.
Choose a sunny spot approximately 2 metres in diameter. Mark a circle on the ground and start building the spiral wall from the outside, working inward and upward. Use natural stone, brick, or reclaimed concrete blocks. The wall should rise to about 1 metre at the centre and include a small pond or basin at the lowest point. Fill the interior with layers of cardboard, coarse rubble for drainage at the top, and a mix of topsoil and compost throughout.
Plant according to microclimate. At the sunny, dry top: rosemary, thyme, oregano, and lavender. In the middle zone: sage, chives, parsley, and coriander. At the cool, moist base near the water feature: mint, watercress, and chives. The spiral shape means every herb gets its ideal conditions within arm's reach of your kitchen door. Water the spiral from the top and let gravity distribute moisture naturally. This permaculture classic produces an astonishing amount of herbs from a small area while serving as a striking garden focal point.
