Dealing with Common Chicken Health Issues
Healthy chickens are active, bright-eyed, and have smooth, full plumage. Learning to recognise the early signs of illness can mean the difference between a simple home remedy and a serious health crisis. Most common chicken ailments can be prevented through good management and treated effectively when caught early.
Worms are the most common health issue in backyard flocks. Signs include weight loss, pale combs, and visible worms in droppings. Natural prevention includes feeding diatomaceous earth mixed into feed, garlic in the water, and regularly rotating foraging areas. For treatment, use a commercial poultry wormer following the dosage instructions carefully. Mites and lice cause restlessness, feather loss, and reduced egg production. Dust-bathing areas with wood ash and diatomaceous earth help prevent external parasites.
Respiratory infections manifest as sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nostrils, and laboured breathing. Isolate affected birds immediately, ensure good ventilation in the coop, and keep the area dry. Apple cider vinegar (one tablespoon per litre of water) supports immune function. Bumblefoot, a bacterial infection of the foot pad, appears as swelling or a dark scab on the foot. Clean the wound with dilute betadine, apply antibacterial ointment, and bandage. Prevention is key - provide clean, dry bedding and smooth roosting surfaces.
